Metaphor to Movies – Powell River Digital Film School
Over this past week we have enjoyed working with the very inspiring students from the Powell River Digital Film School while they where at Loon Lake. Each year Tony and his crew get off to a great start, by heading out on a retreat to get to know each other on a deeper level.
While we facilitated many activities and workshops for the students during the retreat, covering topics like communication, collaboration, and emotional intelligence the theme of metaphors kept coming up. Of course this got us thinking… Exactly why are metaphors so powerful?
By definition a metaphor is “a concept of understanding one thing in terms of another”, and comes from the Greek verb to transfer. In looses terms metaphors are simply comparing one thing to another.
This is exactly what we do! We create various experiences - often adventurous by nature, and help people the build a metaphor fresh from that experience, comparing the experience to the everyday.
Our High Ropes programs are a great example of this. As we take groups out of the “everyday” into the woods to play up in the trees, we consistently here;
“I really had to trust in…”
“you have to believe that they will support you”
“I’ve never challenged myself like this”
“seeing my partner try so hard, I knew I could do it too”
What an awesome opportunity to transfer these thoughts and beliefs into your next video project, school group, workplace and into LIFE! All by looking for metaphors.
Thank you PRDFS students for the great week at Loon Lake and taking meaning from our experiences. All the best as you all turning meaning into film!
“Ladder side TAKE. Net side GIVE!“
